Sheesh. They sure are confusing. I don’t know which ones to use. Basically, categories are older than tags (which were introduced quite recently in WordPress).
The current system I’ve worked out uses categories for broad grouping of posts, and then the tags are used for further distinction between posts. The thing is that, there is no way to actually see a list of tags on the blog.
Sigh! All that work, down the drain. And I’ve been confronted with another problem. Once I enter a tag in…let’s say…lowercase, and I want to change it to uppercase, I CAN’T. I tried a lot, and checked out the forums to kind a number of hopeless people like me. So, all subsequent posts under the tag ‘Storage’ and a few more, will look weird, because all other tags will be in lowercase. I hope that WordPress fixes this soon.
