First Impressions : VMC

I’m still quite confused. I consider it to be nothing short of a fluke…perhaps an administrative cock-up of some sorts. Let me go through the sequence of events once again…just to make sure I’ve got it right:

  1. Sometime before the ‘Boreds’, I had decided to apply for the entrance test for Vidyamandir. This was done, obviously, with the knowledge that my chances of getting in were practically non-existent. Nevertheless, a thousand bucks out of my pocket, I realised I better gear up for the task.
  2. After a few days, I was e-mailed the prospectus and admit card, accompanied with a test prep CD. The contents of the CD were…well…tough…for someone of my level (which isn’t exactly very high). Still, I gave some of the tests, was shocked and awed, in alternation, by the results.
  3. They also e-mailed a printed sample paper, and it seemed to me it was better suited for a CAT exam prep rather than IIT, with a range of data interpretation questions et al. Still, I found this bit a bit easier.
  4. Obviously, all of this collective bouyancy vanished in a puff of dust on 7th May, when I saw the VMC paper. It was a curious thing. Some of them were mind-bogglingly tough. Some were easy once you looked past the complicated language. And some were of the type you’d get if someone was introducing a topic to you. I left quite a few, bearing in mind that negative marking was aloof.
  5. Some squirmy days later, on the 12th, I was reminded by Ponnappa in the morning that my result was due. How I forgot, I have no idea. But I checked up, and my state of mind can be said to be relieved. I couldn’t be jumping all over the place, because I didn’t get into the regular batch, but I couldn’t be sad, because the extended classroom course wasn’t exactly rubbish, was it?

So, it took me a bit of time to digest the fact that I was a VMC student. I then had to go to enroll myself at their Punjabi Bagh centre. Bearing in mind that the centres would be allotted on a first-come-first-serve basis, and the fact that one of the centres was in Patna(!), I decided to stay over at my friend, Saumya’s, place in Punjabi Bagh just to make sure I got it in the PB centre. Was slightly concerned when I showed up much before time and saw people pouring out. Apparently they decided to open early. Their course fee is 1 lakh rupees + taxes, to be paid in three installments.

The next thing to be noted is the commute taxing journey of epic proportions. It could be called a commute if you’re talking about going in a car. In a bus, it’s different – with blueline drivers who are reluctant to come to a halt at bus stops, and buses overcrowded to the extent that you have to hang off the handles at the door. Standard procedure for most people…am still getting used to it. Mom had offered to hire a driver, but I refused point-blank, because that #&@*%^$ would charge an arm and a leg, and steal some fuel while at it.

For my first class, I caught a bus from school going to Punjabi Bagh. I reached a bit tired, quite hot and still in my school uniform. I noted that most of the others were in casuals. That being besides the point, the class began soon. The class was Chemistry, the topic was stoichiometry. The pace does take some time getting used to. As does the fact that it’s almost 3 hours non-stop of studying. There is something with some semblence of a break, for about five minutes, but we’re usually given a question to solve before it, so it really doesn’t count. I’ve noticed that by the last 15 minutes or so of the class, my concentration tends to wander a bit.

The next thing that strikes me is the level of discipline. If you arrive early for a class, you’re supposed to take out your modules (that’s textbooks) and study. During the 3 hours, not a whisper must be heard from you. In fact, if a teacher catches you making eye contact with another student, you’re in for it. And by the way, since we all are considered ‘family’ in VMC, we’re supposed to call our teachers as ‘bhaiyya’, and not as ‘sir’. Still having trouble getting used to that. And obviously, no idle chit-chat after a class either.

The work they assign us is also pretty rigorous. VMC stresses a lot on self-study. Before I can attend a class, I have to study up that portion, or at least die trying. There are 4 notebooks per subject, making it a total of 12. A pre-class notebook for the pre-class prep, where we’re supposed to do all the illustrations and questions of that section that’s going to be taught, an in-class notebook to take down notes during the class, a fare notebook to fare up the in-class notebook, and a practice notebook to do all extra stuff, cause ideally we’re supposed to do each module’s questions three times over at least, and some teachers prefer to have the lectures fared-up a few more times.

As I said…very rigorous.

I only know two teachers as of now, because I’ve only had three classes – 2 Chem and 1 Maths. I’m taught Chemistry by Kulwinder sir, and Maths by Vivek sir. Kulwinder sir describes himself as the Hitler of VMC Extended, and I wouldn’t really contest that. Vivek sir jokes around a bit more and seems a bit more forgiving.

EDIT : No idea why I’m doing this a few months after having left VMC to pursue my overseas UG dreams, but the last statement is very misleading.

Vivek sir jokes around a bit more and seems a bit more forgiving.

This should read.

Vivek sir jokes around a bit more and seems a bit more forgiving. if you bothered to study before a class. Otherwise, please begin pleading to your personal God of choice and hope that he doesn’t come and start breathing down your neck. Avoid the aisle seats.

My next class is on the 13th, and it’s Physics. Hope it goes well…wish me luck…

  1. Kullu Bhaiya is a good chemistry teacher. He’ll teach you everything except organic chemistry. He’s definitely not ‘the Hitler’

Although Vivek bhaiya jokes around, don’t take him lightly he’s got an other side which is completely different.

All I would suggest is be sincere with your work and maintain all your copies properly.

All the best for your Physics class.Do write about the Physics teacher.

  2. ‘Fare’ notebook? Sigh. There goes your English, Vivek. Your transformation to the Dark Side of the Force has begun, young apprentice of Darth Vader.

  3. Kullu Bhaiya will make classes fun. Wait till the organic classes from Bade Bhaiya. Then You’ll see class.
Vivek is… well, though not exactly evil….. highly demanding… and mentally taxing.
    I think Pallu bhaiya’ll teach you physics… He’s kinda OK…

P.S. Take my advice. Don’t ever, not even if it’s a matter of ultra-tiredness, even think of, or actually do, take a nap in vivek’s class. He’ll do you in for good.

  4. Well, it seems we’ve all seen rather different sides of the teachers. Well I definitely used to sleep in Vivek Bhaiya’s classes in the class X aim-iiT course. Perhaps, they were lenient with us then. I’m pretty sure you’re Physics teacher is gonna be this “shobhit” person, who’s supposedly very lenient, and slow. Anyways, congrats on your “achievement” (;)) and have fun. if you manage to. :P

  5. just shut up.

  6. hi.
A good description of the environment at the VMC.I’m in class 10 and would like to clear the entrance exam. Can you prescribe any study material or a particular book or so..

  7. @Anon – To be honest, just be really thorough with your class 10th math, and try to do as much of the sample paper CD they send you with the registration. There will be some comprehension type questions, where they explain a concept in a short para, and then give you a couple of questions to do. Read these questions carefully, and then you should have no problem whatsoever in attempting them.

  8. Hey, I just gave the test a few days back. Attempted 34 out of 52. How many had you attempted? (I guess you still remember).

  9. I honestly don’t remember how many I attempted. Sorry, can’t help you there.

  10. i am in class 10 now and thinking of going to vmc classes but my friends & parents say that start vmc in 11 class. Plz help me

  11. also tell me timings and days of classes plz

  12. Karan, VMC has launched a 3-year programme, this very year. Before this, if you got admission into AimIIT in class X, it did not mean that you would automatically get admission into the 2-year programme for XI-XII. But now, you can. Plus, the boards are gone, so you’ll have a bit more time on your hands. I suggest you give the exam for the 3-year course, because right now, not that many people know about it. Also, there is no fixed schedule for classes. On an average, in the 2 year programme, there are 2 classes per week.

  13. hey can u tell me 1 thing.

Is vmc ecc gud or fitjee ?????????

I have got selected for both and i am a bit confused abt it.

  14. Great, great. Well, I went for ECC, and well, I don’t really regret that. But if you think the distance is a bit too much, or the schedule a bit too unpredictable, you can go for FIITJEE.

  15. some 1 told me that in vmc they start their coaching from a higher level i.e. not clearing the base.

But in fitjee they 1st clear the base then go on teaching for iit.

    Is it true??

  16. How can I say? I’ve never been to FIITJEE! But they do bother to make sure you understand the concept before going on to do advanced problems. Plus, certain topic are repeated. For example, in Chemistry, there’s this topic called ‘Resonance’. It’s been done 3 times by 3 different teachers, to make sure it got into our heads.

But, as I said, for FIITJEE, you should ask someone else. I’ll tell one of my friends to reply to your comments. He’s from FIITJEE, in one of the top batches. OK?

  17. ya please do so if u can.

and please tell me 1 more thing that did u had any problem when u attended the earlier classes of vmc i.e. the very 1st classes.

Did they cleared the concepts or u cleared it by self studing??

ur 1st class in vmc was at a level that u understood what they taught or was is a little difficult to understand??

  18. The very first class was on Stoichiometry, and they always teach from the extreme basics. Like he spent 15 minutes telling us what a mole is, so I expect it to be fine. How much scholarship is FIITJEE offering?

  19. fittjee is offering 20% scholarship to me.

As u told ur 1st class was on Stoichiometry(i dont know what that word means) but ya i know abt mole concept(studied in class 9th).

Are u able to coup up with vmc and ur cbse syllabus AS every1 considers this to be a problem while they are enrolled in coaching centres

Does vmc syallbus helps u in studying cbse????

  20. Listen, you cannot hope to score in IITJEE without a solid base in your NCERT concepts. So, yes, there is quite a lot of overlapping of syllabus, which can help you in school. But at the same time, balancing your workload will be dicey, because VM is usually stricted than other coaching places about work.

  21. So what do u think

Shall i join vmc or not??

let me tell u 1 thing as
now i have just entered 11class,its being much difficult
for me to understand the concepts of physics and chem.

So do u think ill be able understand what would be taught in vmc??

By the way how was ur performance in 11 class in ur school?like how much marks did u scored?

  22. which is a better choice VMC ECC of FIITJEE

  23. @Sahil – VMC is not bad. I will maintain that. As for concepts being a bit tough, you should ask doubts. Any and every teacher will be glad to clear them for you, be it at school, or at VM. I got 74% in 11th. But I blame that more to a unhealthy mix of plays, general quizzes, computer quizzes, rather than VM.

@Sims – I went for VMC, as you can see. Go for what you think is best.

  24. thanks for ur advise.

now i have joined vmc ecc.

  25. Hi.I am giving the aim-IIT entrance and wanted to ask is there is any specific source which I should refer for revision of the concepts.I am wanting just a light revision of the topics and the VMC people haven’t even given any CD or sample papers for preparation. Also,I am not very serious about clearing it.I would most probably be joining VMC next year(if I clear the entrance).I am giving this one just to have a basic idea of the test format but still I don’t want to loose my confidence.

  26. I suggest you work hard for the aim-IIT test, because now VMC has introduced a 3-year course. Not enough people may know about it. If you get into it, you can avoid the rush that will arrive inevitable next year, when you try to get in. There is not particular source to revise from, but I suggest you be thorough with your class 9th concepts in physics, chemistry and maths. You may or may not know, but physics and chemistry in 9th are quite related to the same subjects in 11th. Especially Newton’s laws and the mole concept, to name a few. If you revise your 9th well enough, you shouldn’t have much trouble.

  27. My son has got into VMC aim-IIT, 3 years course. He is already studying in FIITJEE Dwarka ( 3 year course )since last one month. What should we do? Should we join VMC or continue at FIITJEE Dwarka. As of now the quality at FFITJEE Dwarka is not up to the mark. However, commuting from Dwarka to Punjabi Bagh is also not easy.

  28. If you must send your son to FIITJEE, I would not recommend the Dwarka branch, as the best teachers are to be found in the Kalu Sarai centre. As for transportation problems, now that the Metro has come up, he shouldn’t have any problems whatsoever. Putting together these 2 factors, I think VMC would be a better choice.

  31. Hi Vivek,
Thanks! How r u doing at VMC now? I guess u would be in 12th and taking 2011 JEE?
Would try and come back to post our experiences.

  32. I have been selected for the Aim-IIT programme. The thing i wanted to know from you is that by what time (generally) did you return to your home after the VMC classes. AND what was the duration of the VMC classes ? AND what was the DPS VK bus no. you took to Pitampura and by when did you reach Pitampura??

  33. i tried for the vmc entrance test held on 16 jan 2011, unfortunately i wasn’t selected, i attempted 34 questions. can you please help me or provide me with some tips for the exam in april.

  34. i also study at the fiitjee dwarka centre but i didn’t find anything useful here for the vmc xam. they always make u study the higher level topics without clearing the basic things. please i am eager to noe some tips for the vmc xam and what to study mainly for it. i am in 9th standard.

  35. The only way either for VMC exam or for any other, is to do lot of problems. Then only one can know of what he/she does not know. Some books that I would recommend starting from 9th are Hall & Knight Algebra & SL Loney Trigonometry apart from NCERT books.

  36. i have completed all the books of hall and knight(higher algebra is about to end). they provided help to some questions only

  37. Sorry for the late reply. Was/am unwell.

@Hello friends – Yes, I’m in 12th. But no I’m no longer going to VM anymore, and neither am I giving the IITJEE ’11. This is because I’ve shifted my targets to overseas universities (as can be deduced from my new post series Operation “Soaring Eagle”. I’ve already got admission at a number of universities in both the US and the UK, so I’ll definitely be going abroad for undergraduate studies. But I can still advise on VM and IITJEE in general. I’ll be sure to post in March and April about it.

@Yash – I think I’ve answered all your questions in person, so I guess I don’t need to answer them here.

@Siddharth – Hmm…as far as I remember, the VM entrance was purely Math. I don’t know if its still conducted that way. The questions that I encountered were a mix of comprehension types (where they introduced a new concept, based on pre-existing knowledge and then gave you a couple of questions on that concept). These questions are tough to prepare for. Instead, a cool head will help with logical thinking which will help crack these. To be honest, I’m sure that my admission to VM ECC was made possible due to my answering a majority of these questions. As for the others, I didn’t really prepare *too* much for the exam, because it was barely a week after my 10th board exams. So a bit of 11th maths, and the VM sample paper CD was all I really prepared.

  38. Pingback: First Impressions - Review Of FIITJEE

  39. Hello Bhaiya!! I am a student of grade 10(CBSE), studying in Tamilnadu, though I am from Bhubaneshwar. First Of Al, a very Happy New Year!! The thing is that I have been selected for FIITJEE’s Pinnacle Program at Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Chennai. I have got a discount of 65% on tuition fee. I got 86/225 in objective papers(All India Rank- 1432), but in subjective paper, I got 13.5/30. And my discount is based on subjective paper performance only. I wanted to know how do the FIITJEE people do the batching, whether I will get a seat in the top batch. I also want to get KVPY scholarship besides preparing for NSEP, NSEC, NSEA, and RMO. PLease guide me bhaiya, so that I can perform weel and reach my goal. Currently, I have got selected for second stage of NSTSE conducted by Unified Council. I got a score of 83/100.
