Nokia 5230 firmware version 40.0.003 now available

You can read my review of the Nokia 5230 here.

Just a quick message to all Nokia 5230 users out there. The latest version of the Nokia 5230 firmware is now available for download. You’ve got 2 main options if you want to get it on your phone:

  • You can opt to do an OTA (over-the-air) upgrade via your GPRS/EDGE/3G network. Bear in mind that the download is 140.8 MB, which may put a rather large dent in your monthly bill.
  • You can use Nokia Software Updater and then use your PC to update your phone’s firmware.

The latter method is safer because having an external agency in control allows the phone to be completely shut down while rebooting after the upgrade, reducing the chances of a fatal error i.e. bricking of your 5230 (which will result in a short, but expensive trip to a Nokia Care Center).

Note: It’s normal for your phone to go blank, get listed as disconnected from your PC and generally freak you out while updating itself. It’s not to be worried about

  • A redesigned on-screen QWERTY keyboard. Font is a bit bigger, but I’m still investigating the real utility of this.
  • Slightly improved Gallery response times.
  • PC Suite mode relabeled as Ovi Suite mode. (Not a good sign…)

I’ll update this post as and when I find the rest of the changes. It would be so much easier if Nokia just posted a changelog with each iteration of the firmware…
