Change in answer script for CBSE class XII English paper

UPDATE: A circular has been uploaded on the CBSE website. You can find it here. It states that the vertical A4 size answer sheets will not be used on 11 March 2011. This was originally slated for only Delhi schools. Superintendents of all schools have been advised to not use the sheets even if they’ve received the bundles. I sincerely hope that they pay heed to the circular. Nevertheless,  in my opinion, considering the flip-flop regarding this issue, and the general lack of transparent communication between schools, CBSE and the centers, there is a slight chance that you may still end up with the new format. So be prepared. Just in case.
  • A4 size sheets
  • Orientation will be portrait, instead of landscape (i.e. answers will be written along the shorter side, instead of the longer side)
  • Sheets will be ruled, as before
  • Space for each answer will be clearly demarcated on the answer script. Answers must be limited to the space provided. Major problem if you make a mistake and need to cross something out, or if your handwriting is just too big.
  • OMR (optical mark recognition) cover sheet for roll number and name. Remember to get an HB pencil (assuming it is a pencil OMR), or a blue/black ballpoint pen (if it isn’t).

Note for students of DPS Vasant Kunj : This has been confirmed by Meeta Kumar ma’am, our English HoD, who confirmed this from DPS, Rohini, who received a circular from CBSE. Our school will receive this soon, and a copy will be uploaded onto the school website soon.

Those are the bullet points for you. Feel free to close this tab/window if you’re not interested in a short rant (short, because preparing for a Physics final is several times more important than ranting about the CBSE and its experiments on us, the guinea pigs). The basic gist of it is that, barely 2 weeks before the English board exam (AISSCE/Class XII/the last one you’ll give) is due to take place [11th March, for those of you who are forgetful/least bothered, which also happens to be my birthday (Woohoo)], the CBSE has deemed it prudent to take the decision to change the answer script for the English paper. It is widely acknowledged to be good manners/common sense to give at least one year’s notice, so that teachers are able to provide ample opportunity for students to get comfortable with a new format.

To be honest, this is nothing new, considering CBSE’s past track record. Something similar happened two years ago, when I gave my 2009 AISSE [the class Xth board {honestly, why can’t the CBSE come up with better acronyms than AISSE and AISSCE, which are so interchangeable by the unwitting soul (OWL and NEWT are so much better, in this respect)}].

(I see that you successfully navigated my nested parenthesis structure, good job)

The paper had an extra question. 18, instead of 17. Not a very significant change, but a change nevertheless. And something that the teachers did not have adequate time to prepare us for [OK, I know that’s taking it a bit too far (last time I checked, most class Xth students possessed brains, or an equivalent organ)]. Our school’s English department was lucky enough to learn about it in time to tell us. Other schools weren’t so lucky. Add to that the fact that my batch’s class Xth English result turned out so bad, and Meeta ma’am is convinced that the batch is jinxed.

Superstition aside, the English paper is probably the only one that I (and many students) will give, that is evaluated on a relatively subjective basis i.e. the marking scheme has value points, not word-to-word answers. Other subjects, such as math and the sciences, are relatively straightforward to evaluate. You missed a step? –0.5 marks. Simple. English, on the other hand, has always been a game of chance. But weirdly enough, the marking scheme instructions are so rigid, that this supposedly-subjectively-evaluated-subject turns out to be yet another farce. There are no opinion-based questions in the paper. It’s basically the same routine – swallow your books and barf it out on the paper. Except now, we’ve got an A4 sized barfbag with specific places to barf out specific amounts and content.

On another note, best of luck to all CBSE students out there. Make yourself, and people around you, proud. :)

  1. Hahaha =D I wuz pretty much pissed after learning about the new format (its only new for us, though. Few years back, the same format wuz used.) My handwriting is, well, big. And I have a tough time sticking to the word limit (which is bad, I know.) But, anyway, (we can’t do anything much about it, can we?).. Reading this article really made me laugh. I guess, by the time I reached the last line, I was no longer fretting about the format-change-thingee. :) Good job, giving us this information in sucha cool way. And, all the best for your physics exam too =) physics. *sighs*

  2. I don’t know if this format was being used a few years back. My HoD would’ve mentioned it. Nevertheles, even if it was used before, no reason to spring it on us 2 weeks before the exam. And good luck for Physics too.

  3. “Except now, we’ve got an A4 sized barfbag with specific places to barf out specific amounts and content.”
    LMAO.

  4. Arrey, it wuz used. My cousin gave the Exam in 2003, and the same format wuz operative, back then.
Anyway. Yea, I know, informing us two weeks before the exam about such changes is not the way. But then again, we’re accustomed to CBSE’s fickle..fickleness? (For the sake of disclosure, I know fickleness isn’t a noun.)
    Anywayy.
Though, I totally didn’t realise the 18-instead-of-17-questions thing that happened in Class 10th Exams. :/ Gawd, which world do I live in..

  5. @Sid – :D
@Ashi – Ah well, 2003 was many, many moons ago. Wouldn’t rememer about stuff that happened back then. And yes, you are correct, ‘fickleness’ isn’t a word, although saying ‘CBSE’s fickle nature’ is a useful workaround. And don’t worry about not having noticed the extra question in 10th. I’m sure you must’ve attempted it anyway. ;)

  6. Yea, ‘fickle nature’ is what I’d thought of. But I wanted to emphasise CBSE’s fickleness, er, fickle nature. Ficklety also sounds fine. Why isn’t there a noun for fickle? I just presented two..

  7. “Fickleness of mind” is a noun. But not fickleness alone. Nevertheless, I’m sure we could get you in touch with somebody at the Oxford University Press who can add the two words right away. ;)

  8. hey vivek
it was great to see your blog
i didnt know u ran one
    but this english thing sucksssss
a person like me who has a big handwriting and sooooooo much to write it is truly going to be a war to wage with the paper ……
anyways all the best to u for the boards and the succesive exams in house for uuuuuuu
    anaya

  9. Since I only know one Anaya, I’m assuming it’s the who that makes a great time with me when we take on Upasana. ;) To be honest, you’ll have bigger worries than English in the coming few weeks. Best of luck. Rock the boards.

  10. shame on u
    for even guesssing
    ofcourse itsssss me
    ;)

  11. 3 days to BS, missy. Make sure you blow away the examiner’s mind. :)

  12. If ‘fickleness of mind’ is a noun, then why can’t ‘fickleness of the CBSE’ be one?
    Not fair.
Anyway, just in case you don’t know already, the new-answer-script-pattern is only going to be for the students giving the Delhi Board exam. Since I’m in Gurgaon, and I give the all-India wala, I’m safe =D
So, its only the Delhi kids who are the guinea pigs, after all. =P
    No, but, all the best.
And, physics exam tomorrow.. So, all the best for that, too.

  13. I know. Just saw. Post updated.

  14. Please stop sucking up to MIT Admissions :P

  15. Haha. I’m sorry if you think of it that way. It’s not as if its going to make a difference you know.

Read my response to Observer on this post. It’ll help clear any misconceptions.

  16. I wasn’t the only one – haha!

  17. Haha. No you weren’t.

  18. I want to know whether vertical or horizontal answer script will be used for delhi region cbse class 12 English core in march 2012?

  19. Don’t know. You should ask a CBSE representative. Call them up or something. Best of luck.
